Many thanks to my project spectrum postcard partner for May. Cherry's fabric, lace, button and bead confection arrived at my doorstep this past weekend. It's a stunning bit of work all the way from Wales. But, here's the best part:
The flip-side includes a charming bit of verse along with a number of May associations – emerald is the birthstone for May, May begins on Bealtain, the astrological sign Gemini begins in May and hawthorn is May's flower. All so wickedly pagan that I know Cherry is a kindred and sassy soulmate. And, she raises goats!
Is everything poetry? Or, is poetry everything?
For winter's rains and ruins are over,
And all the season of snows and sins;
The days dividing lover and lover,
The light that loses, the night that wins;
And time remembered is grief forgotten,
And frosts are slain and flowers begotten,
And in green underwood and cover
Blossom by blossom the spring begins.
-Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909),
When the Hounds of Spring
Are on Winter's Traces
Sweet dreams, green May.
