Last night, inspired by the WTF stupidity of Forbes (dot) com and their annual ranking of American cities by mostly obnoxious, headline-grabbing benchmarks, I posted here about my fair city’s ranking of #1 for drunkeness.
I’ve removed the post in question and here’s why. It was a feeble attempt at humor, and it wasn’t honest writing. Even when I’m being a smart ass I do attempt to reveal my gut feelings about the issue at hand.
The truth is, drunkeness isn’t funny. Ask anyone who has experienced the devastating effects of alcoholism. We are everywhere. Alcoholics destroy lives, sometimes and way too often, as a result of injuring or killing another person. Alcoholics can also destroy lives in more insidious ways, by breaking down and destroying a child’s sense of self-worth. By bringing violence into their homes. By becoming the focal point for a family’s conspiracy of lies and elaborate coverups.
The trouble with the Forbes survey is not that they ranked my hometown as the #1 location in the country for drunkeness, but that this supposed “fact” is being treated as entertainment.
Trust me. I’m not laughing.
